Un-Bubba'd 1903 |
Lead | |
|
Recently I bought a Bubba'd 1903 for $100. I figured it would make a good project gun. Well I got it home and figured out just how much was wrong with
it. I decided to see if I could undo some of the damage that was done. I have included some before photos. In one of the pictures you can see bailing twine
that was used as a spacer on the front sling swivel and the high quality front action screw. I did the best I could with what I had. I know it's not
perfect but I am pretty satisfied with the end result as you will see in my follow up posting.

As long as the receiver had been drilled, and the bolt bent, it seems a perfect opportunity to make an M1903A4 clone.
Just thinking. Good work with what you had. Eric

Much improved! I agree w/ Eric. As cheap as you got it, an A4 clone would have been awful neat.
Is that a milsurp stock or a Boyds? That thing is beautiful. |

The stock is Milsurp. I got it from Numrich for 65.00. I'll post a range report soon. Thanks

How did you handle the holes in the receiver ring? I have a bubba'd 1903 A3 that I paid $100 for An A4 is a great idea! Were the originals drilled for the
scope mount? I have a really old Weaver K4.

I used the scope base screws that came with the rifle. I cut them short, slotted and screwed them in flush. Since I was going to duracoat, I used JB to cover
the slots.

Yes, the A4s were drilled and tapped for a Redfield Junior mount, iirc.

The stock is a "scant" stock. Nice looking stock.
I can't make out much of the serial number but it looks to be a "low number". |

I don't know, HD. On this monitor it shows up as 974624, which would make a safe high number.

I put my reading glasses on and Curt is right as usual.

I had an '03-A4 clone for a while. The Redfield Junior mount that was used on the 03-A4's used the rear dovetail groove from the 'A3's rear
sight as an anchor point, I don't think it would work on a straight M1903 receiver.
It looks really nice! Ya done good. Matt |

A "bridge type" Redfield or Leupold mount would fit just fine I'm thinking.

Dam good job ! I"am beginning to think that we have lost more weapons like this to bubba, then to actual combat ! But I have found bubba"s work most
every where. Cars,boats,houses,etc.

I built an 03-A4 clone on a bubba'd, sorterized, 03-A3. Darn thing shoots almost 1 inch, 10 shot groups, out of a 2 groove barrel.

Colin, do you have any pictures of your rifle?

I'm not Colin, but my '03-A4 clone was much the same, and darn accurate. Here's some pictures.
(This is probably starting to skirt the forum rules, so I do want to state that I bought this rifle from Bubba, it was already drilled and tapped and in a chopped up stock. All I did was try to make it "more correct"...) Matt |

Mwie etc: Your rifle is prettier than mine: I used a straight stock, while the real 03-A4s were built on scant stocks. I got an old Weaver 29S Special scope,
just post-WW II, I think. Looks a lot like a 330C, but a LOT cheaper. How does your rifle shoot?
After 50 years with film, I finally got a digital camera. I can take pix, but don't know how to post them. |

When I had it, that '03-A4 clone shot really well. I never got the chance to try it with match grade ammunition, so I don't know what its true
potential is. I sold it to a friend to fund another project. He was all fired up about owning a "sniper rifle" that he could go out and shoot. That
friend consequently let it sit in a closed case without looking at it for over a year. He called me up all ticked off because the scope body and rings had
started to rust. Turns out there was some moisture in the case (his case, not mine). I told him he was an idiot for letting it sit for that long without
checking on it. The rust wasn't too bad, but the blueing on the scope will have to be touched up because of it. The scope is an old (nearly period correct,
I think) Weaver K4, and it was in nearly mint condition when I installed it.
Now he's trying to sell it due to a layoff. If I can scrape together the cash, I just might buy it back, if only to save it from him. Matt |

Matt, what does a clone like that go for?
|

I was offered, and sold it for $1,000.
I would imagine that you would have to spend a good chunk of that if you tried to build one. Matt |
