Approximately 6 years ago I bought a sporter 71/84 from a Gunboards member for $200. The sporter work was not "bubba" by any stretch of the imagination leading me to believe it was most likely done in Europe by a knowledgeable gunsmith. The barrel was cut to 26" and nicely recrowned. The original military sight was cut from the barrel stub and reinstalled via dovetail into the shorter barrel. The rear military sight was untouched. The mag tube was shortened to a two round capacity and the military stock cut down and shaped nicely. When I received the rifle, it was shooting more than a foot high at 100 yards so I installed a Williams adjustable after removing the military sight. This brought the groups down to POI at 100 yards but my old eyes still couldn't see the wedge shaped front sight very well so I ordered a very high front sight from Brownell's. It wouldn't fit the extremely wide dovetail in the barrel so I cut the front sight from the dovetail. I drifted out the military front sight, ground it down to the base, cut a groove with my Dremel and then J&B welded the high blade into the groove. When the J&B set up I filed down the front sight and readjusted the Williams. Now I get a clear sight picture. My last load test using 29 grains of 4198 (1327 fps) with a tissue wad over the powder and a 387 grain LFN grouped 1.748".
