A COMPLETE change of heart.....AR-15 (updated) |
Lead | |
|
I've completely reversed my opinion on a certain gun...and have no qualms saying so. I spent years slamming the AR-15...based largely on its price and the
opinions of others who slammed its shortcomings. Not being able to serve in the military and see it first-hand, I had to go on "reviews" only.
However, after seeing it do so well in the plate matches and handling a friend's rifle (I am the one who advised he get it actually) I not only came to buy
one myself, but also get really excited about owning it. Once again, "I wish I had done this/gotten one sooner!"

Greg, the only thing I don't like about an AR is that they are boring to shoot. I like recoil and feeling the power of the larger calibers. I'm down to
one AR now and one Daewoo K2 so mouse guns aren't really for me. But having said that I will probably keep what I have left. I may sell the K2 if I can be
talked into it. If you make it down for the next match you should try it out. It's better than an AR IMHO and experience.

I'm not excited by the AR. They do shoot better groups than most M1, M14 type, FAL and other such rifles. AR ammo is cheaper. Their appeal ends there for
me, but this is America: buy what you enjoy.

Old Sneaky Pete here: Don't be sad because shooting the AR gets boring--there's a lot worst things than being bored. Try different things with your
AR--like shooting a perfect 60 round match with the score of 600 W/60 X's---the closest I have come so far is 600 54Xs and every month at our club matches
I keep on trying, and then try to consistantly shoot 10 shot groups SUB 1/2 MOA. Then you can go "Wild Boar" hunting or Hog (as in Ground Hog) or
Prarie Rats or just go to the range for some good-old "Trigger Time". The only possible downside of the AR Cult is you may become a TactiKool
Kommando???? Have fun. THANX--SNEAKY:)

My one and only "poodleshooter" is one I created on a pre-ban EA lower with an SP1 upper and triangular handguards. It took me 20 minutes to assemble
it using a kitchen knife and a plastic bag and when I took it to the range, I was hitting "X"s with it at 100 yards out of the box. It can be boring
but it is still fun. It's not my "go-to" rifle by any means but it is one that is reliable to put rounds where I aim and it does have some
personality but no where near as much as a wood-stocked beast in 8mm or 30.06. It's kinda like a Honda compared to a GTO. They both get you where
you're going but in a completely different way. Everyone should have at least one, however, but keep it simple. The one thing that always elicits a smile
from me is seeing some of the weird, convoluted "tactical" rifles on the rack at the club. They've got headlights on them for goodness sakes!

Thanks guys for the input...remember, I've been buying my own guns since 1994 and this is my FIRST AR. As for being "bored," I've shot all
other plate matches with an AG-42B "Ljungman" and am (so far) the only one to do so at those matches...

HSC, I still clearly remember the first bowling pin shoot I competed in at our club. I brought an FAL to an AR meet. Well, it wasn't an "AR"
meet per se but that's what most guys were shooting. They'd be shooting and shooting trying to knock down a bowling pin at 50 yards. One shot from
that FAL, however, and they went down to stay. Turned out the ARs rounds were drilling perfect holes through the pins and the technique was to try to
"skin" the pin to knock it down. The NATO round had not problems doing that, however. Who beat me? A guy with a Mini14 and one eye. Honest.

About 8 years ago, I can remember telling my brother in law I would never own an AR. I bought my first as a representative in my military collection. I started
shooting 3 gun matches with it a couple years later. It's far from my favorite rifle, but considering it's purpose, it's definitely a keeper. I
enjoy shooting them- they make it so easy to hit targets in the 200-500 yard range.

I'm an AR believer. So accurate, reliable, maintainable, versatile, and shall I say, sexy. One platform that can be instantly transformed into such a wide
array of weapons, missions, and calibers. As far as downrange destruction goes, only what you hit gets killed, and an AR will hit.

Yeah but Ar's just don't smack steel plates down at 200 yards like the 30 cals do. I like to knock them off with authority not just "nudge"
them off.
You might not believe the difference until you see it in person. Or on my videos.

Another reason I think a 6.5 or 6.8 is a good answer. You get more knock down power with a small platform and high mag capacity.

Yeah, I'm seriously thinking 6.5 Grendel now Greg. Great down range knock down power just like the Swede.

GREAT rifle! Iv'e been knocking things down with one since Uncle Sam gave me a loaner in '67 that saved my bacon more than once and never failed me. I
now own a Bushmaster M-4 A3 and I kneel at the alter of the AR-15 platform.

Ahh... welcome to the dark side.
You can only resist so long...
before you realize that any situation calling for lead slinging that I might find myself in, aside from killing an exceptionally large, angry, hairy, wild
beast, can be dealt with easily by 5.56 NATO. Inside of 50 yards is where it shines, arguably surpassing the terminal performance of even the mighty .30 cal,
and where almost any social encounter I (or any of us as civilians) might have will be. Beyond that, it is still more than lethal enough and can place rounds
EXACTLY where I want them if I do my part. Boring to shoot? Maybe in the sense that it always works and is stupid accurate. But that kind of boring is GOOD
boring. It leaves time for practicing and becoming proficient -- something we owe ourselves if we consider our firearms to play a part in our
personal/family/homeland defense.
My AR purchase on a whim became full-fledged BRD in short order. I went from a stock Bushmaster M4gery, which was a great carbine, through a couple other configurations to land on this last one as my "go to" longarm. The carbine itself is a CMMG 14.5" midlength lightweight barrel. 1/7 chrome lined, with a phantom flash hider. Lower is Nodak Spud's M16A2 "civilian." Stock and grip are Magpul and absolutely worth the small premium in price over GI parts. It shoots better than I do and goes "bang" every time. That is EVERY time, except for when I had an out-of-adjustment two-stage trigger in it which I have since replaced with the stock trigger. The thing even runs with Wolf ammo!

One thing that I don't like about the AR-15 is that is is hard to drop a single cartridge into the chamber when you do not have any magazines on hand.
