Improving trapdoor accuracy... |
Lead | |
|
Well, I don't know if it would improve anything but has anyone ever read of or actually tried breech seating bullets in a 45 or 50-70 trapdoor like you
can in a Ballard or Hi Wall schutzen rifle. The tool for seating the bullet would be easy enough to fabricate and I'm sure everyone is familiar with
casting soft lead bullets. I was just wondering if it would make an improvement. I own two 45-70 infantry rifles and they both shoot quite well anyway.
Something to ponder I guess.

Worth a try.The closer the bullet is to the rifling the better. You might try seating bullets out farther til the rifling marks the lead.If its quite a ways
then idea should work.If it isnt far then you may not see a gain.

I'd be very suprised if it hasn't already been done by somebody back in the day. One caveat to keep in mind is that you need to keep any space between
the projectile and the load to an absolute minimum, or you are looking at the possibility of ringing your bore. What you may want to do instead is get a
projectile with a larger nose ride diameter so that it contacts the rifling without being so far forward as to be ahead of the case mouth. Then be sure to load
the case with powder and wads so that there is no space between the loading and the bullet base.
In my experience, Trapdoor's are quite accurate. But it sounds like you really want a schutzen rifle or something more along those lines, and not a rack grade service rifle! |

Back in the 70's we had trapdoor matches 10 rounds at 200 yards. The shooter that always won used to load one cartridge case on the bench for all ten
shots. He weighed all bullets, Weighed each powder charge, indexed the case the same each time. I fired a group randomly loaded (With my Sharps at 50 yards) and
got a 3" group. I weighed the bullets and got a string 1&1/2 inches long. I weighed the bullets,Powder, and cases and the group shrunk to all bullets
touching (5rounds) making one hole. The load was 22 grains of 4759 covered with a cork gasket wad and a 405 gr. bullet. The last match I had a group going but
the wind did me in. Kowsky Raider.
