The mismatched numbers seems to be typical of Japanese rifles. They didn't appear to be as "A" type as the British or others.
Bummer about the staples. You could remove the staples and fill with Accraglass mixed with sawdust. Won't look original. You could also cut out the area around the staples and graft in a piece of wood, would appear to be an arsenal repair. I do have some original stock wood I'd send you for the postage. Then there is trying to find an original stock, usually way over priced, or a reproduction stock. What ever you do, it'll never please a "collector" and you'll just be pleasing yourself. That would be great. "I do have some original stock wood I'd send you for the postage." Is it off a Arisaka? - Not to look a gift horse in the mouth - This is what I have to work with.

A Type 38 to be exact. PM me an address and I'll try to get a piece in the mail within a few days. I have "Guard Drill" this weekend and
we're packing up for deployment next month so I'm a little busy right now. I'll get it to you though.
I'd go another 1/8th deeper with that cut though. Eric

It'll be in the mail tomorrow Al. The color is lighter, but the piece should give you enough material to make a patch.

Decent job, but you coulda' shoulda' orientated the grain in the same direction as the stock. JMHO.

Man your good! I screwed up three time cutting it to size and trying to get the grain to work. Finely use a old piece of Mauser stock to finish it. I'm not very good with wood. Almost didn't post pictures - But I think they turned out better than the stock. Thank all the same! I did learn something from it all. There's some great, helpful people around like your self.
