Berthier Receiver Manufacture Date |
Lead | |

I searched the threads, but couldn't find an answer. How do I determine if a Berthier 1892 carbine is an antique or curio & relic if there is no way
to date the receiver? Were the 1892 carbines manufactured after 1898?

Production dates are hard to determine for these weapons as we keep finding more and more confusing dates as to when we thought they had stopped but here is a
very rough estimate and this is may conflict with others assessments.
Fusil d'Infanterie Modèle 1886 and 1886 M.93... 1887 to 1904 when initial production stopped then 1905-1916 they were re-built if needed. In 1916 and 1917 a very limited number were New Made, then 1917 to about 1939 they were once again re-built as needed Mousqueton d'Artillerie and Cavalerie Modèle 1886 M.93 R35 ... 1935 to 1939 Carabine de Cavalerie Modèle 1890 1ème type ... 1890 to 1895 then some of these were made into the 2ème type Carabine de Cavalerie Modèle 1890 2ème type ... 1895 to unknown Carabine de Cuirassier Modèle 1890 ... 1890 to possibly 1914 but not known for sure Carabine de Gendarmerie Modèle 1890 ... 1890 to unknown Mousqueton d'Artillerie Modèle 1892 ... 1892 to 1916 maybe 1918 ... many of these were re-built after The Great war into the Mle.M.1916 configuration up to 1939 Mousqueton d'Artillerie Modèle M.16 ... 1916 to possibly 1939 but not known for sure Fusil de Tirailleur Indochinois Modèle 1902 ... 1902 to unknown Fusil de Tirailleur Sénégalais "Colonial" Modèle 1907 ... 1907-1915 Fusil de Infanterie Modèle 1907-1915 ... 1915-1939 ... many of these were re-built after The Great war into the Mle.M.1916 configuration up to 1939 Fusil de Infanterie Modèle M.1916 ... 1916 -1939 Some of the dates above are the re-build periods RECORDS were lost or destroyed and this a VERY ROUGH GUESS To answer your question: How do I determine if a Berthier 1892 carbine is an antique or curio & relic if there is no way to date the receiver? ... Antique if the date on the barrel is 1898 or before, curio & relic if the date on the barrel is after 1898. Patrick
