I'm not stubborn, I'm just persistent!
It's 0530 here and a nice but slightly chilly morning. The days are getting to the high 90's or better. I've been working tracking and documenting the training of the BN for the last four days. Checking and entering the individual soldiers training information of tasks into the data base. It's tedious and tiring work. I'll never "dump" on a clerk about their work ever again! It really gives the back and shoulders a workout, I'm here to tell ya. The guys have multiple tasks that must be performed daily, each documented on a "by name" roster (that must be completed to Big Army standards) whichcome to "higher" for checking and input. Any mistakes must be corrected and sometimes they have to be sent back for a correction. A signiture, a missing date or a task that hasn't been properly stated. What a pain! We're tasked with convoy security operations in-country, but the soldiers must still be able to perform all infantry tasks before we deploy. I didn't get to re-qualify my new rifle (and it is brand new) to see how the ACOG works, which is a shame as my earlier score was so poor. I'm not too worried though as I'll get to shoot again at Ft. Stewart, where I'm sure "I'll knock 'em dead." Physical training every day, so getting old really sucks. All I really give a rip about is push ups and sit ups cause I'm so old now I get to walk instead of run for the physical training test. There was some question of my physical condition (permanant physical profile on my back) but I convinced them I can still be of service. Only because I'll be in the BN Headquarters an not in the field. It's kind of hard to have trained all my career for a leadership slot in a "line company," only to finally deploy as an office worker. Still I seem to be able to give advice and direction to the younger guys. We will be getting a short leave at the beginning of May for a few days home before we head off to Ft. Stewart. I miss my wife and my dogs a lot so it will be good to go home. I'd post some pictures, but the Army will no longer allow "thumb drives" on their computers and I'm using the Army's Internet connection and an Army computer. Maybe when I get home for a few days. Your friend, Eric

God bless you and your comrades, Eb. Keep up the good work.
Getting old does suck, but it beats the alternative (for now at any rate). Don't worry about your shooting. I'm sure you'll do us proud next time. See if you can trade your M4 for an M14! |

Eric: During a hiatus in my EW work in 67, I spent nearly a year as a sqdn TNG NCO. Charts, logs, data sheets, reports, etc. Worked harder in that position
than I had in my primary AFSC (MOS) and hated every minute of it. Still, it was a vital bit of work that had to be done to insure the unit's operational
status being determined. Was glad to leave the job behind in my next assignment. So... I understand your situation. Mfwic's never appreciate the work done
until the stand-up happens. Good on ya my friend.

Well, I'm done at Camp Roberts for at least a week. I'm home for a short leave before heading to Georgia.
The guys of my brigade got a lot done during the month. I myself didn't get to attend much of the training as I was tasked with checking the training rosters and inputing the data into the data base for my battalion, 1163 people, five company's, but there were two of us. 31 "warrior" tasks, 11 Battle Drills, about 20 briefings and another 31 or so leader briefings. One of the highest paid clerks in the business. Of course I'll have to take the training at Ft. Stewart where it will be hot and humid.
I did get to qualify with my weapons (M-4 carbine and M-9 pistol) day, night, with "pro mask" and and night vision, then with the laser on the rifle day and night.
These photos were taken with my cell phone so they're not too great, however they show what we are using.

I just got home from a week out of town. Eb, looks like the hills in the background are East Garrison. I was in the Atascadero NG many moons ago and we trained
there. 118 Maint Co. I just saw in the paper where the Oregon NG had a send off ceremony in Bend. Were you part of that? Our Klamath Falls guys are probably
hooked up with your outfit. God speed.

I was "transfered" from HHC 41st IBCT (41st Brigade HQ) to HHC 1/186 IN (1/186 Battalion HQ) while at Camp Roberts. My "ceremony" was
Monday at Medford. 41st is based in Tigard, 45 minutes away on a good traffic day. 1/186 is based in Ashland, 5 1/2 hours away on a terrific traffic day.
I'm thinking I'll have to find "a new home" for my last two years when I get back.
I've been listening to Bob Marley's "Three Little birds", "No worry, 'bout a thing, 'cause every little thing, gonna be all right." It's become my wife's and my song these last few days. Ya. Eric

Eric: Glad that you have some "home time" my friend. Billet looks familiar save for the single-bunk and privacy curtains. Latrine view with
"deep well" does bring back memories of my time at Lackland in '63. Thanks for staying in touch; there are a lot of us who will travel in our
memories with you as you are willing/able to keep us in your emails. Cannot say too often; God go with you and your mate.

I've been doing some last minute packing and re-oiling my "pieces" before I go.
My wife and I have been together for over 30 years now, and I've never had to be gone longer than a few weeks. I'm looking at her sitting on the bench in front of the garage enjoying the sun. Our two dogs are there, sitting at her feet, also enjoying the sun. My heart is broken. I have my duty, and I'll do it to the best of my ability, but I'm telling you, this is the hardest thing I've ever done. "No worry, 'bout a thing, 'cause every little thing, gonna be all right." Eric

What Bill said. Thank you so much for what you are doing for us. Missing out on Oregon's sunny day :-) really underlines how great the cause you are
fighting for really is. You are helping to protect your family, friends, way of life, as wella s all of ours.

Even though we've never met, except here, in the ether of cyberspace, I will have to say that "knowing" you makes me feel both proud and humble. Knowing the sacrifices you and your (fill in generic, non-gender specific, term for "brothers" in arms) are making for all of us, gives me long pause to think on the sacrifices of many genertions who have come before, and the hope of the same from generations yet to be! I thank you my friend!!! |

Hello guys, Things here in Georgia are different to be sure. Seems we brought our Oregon weather here for the first few weeks. We were told that all the rain we were getting was highly unusual for Georgia this time of year. It has, however gotten warmer and it's getting quite humid. After processing in I was given the 1900 to 0700 Staff Duty NCO shift at Battalion HQ. Basically answer the phone, radio, take care of things and play on my
laptop. Unfortuntly the available wireless has a filter that won't let me get on here, and I can't use the military net. I have however discovered that
the computer lab that was set up for the brigade is able to access this site. This was the first time I've gotten in here, we've spent the day training
Base Defense Operations so I don't have to pull SDNCO duties for the next couple of days. The training will be a long one though, 0700 to 2300 tomorrow.

Good to hear from you and hear about your plans for the future and your everyday life. I pumped the hands of two Army boys at the mall tonight and told them
thanks for their service. They gave me an answer I really didn't expect when they said they were proud to serve appreciative people like me! I walked out
to the bike to go home with tears in my eyes! God Bless and keep you buddy and remember if anything is needed by the guys over there let us know! Bill

Hello Eric! Glad to hear that you are doing well. Georgia can be a bear for heat and humitidy this time of year, as I recall from years ago. The equipment you
describe sounds almost like "sci-fi" in some respects or maybe just sci-fi to old farts like me. I'll bet that Pat is going to like NZ; should be
a really decent time of the year for you and she to get together there. One of my Family Practice docs is there for a year - says not to eat the grubs without
a liberal dose of grog. Take care of yourself our friend. Thanks for staying in touch.

Well, things have been rather boring and fairly meaningless for me down here at Ft. Stewart, Georgia so far. My days are spent sleeping, my nights spent
watching movies on my lap top, making the occasional radio check, signing folks in or out for pass, emergency leave, or to pick up some soul from the airport.
25 years learning, teaching, and leading men and now I'm the highest paid janitor/secretary in the Army. I shouldn't complain really, the few times I've wore all my gear for training I felt like I'd been hit by a truck at the end of the day. That armor may save a life or two, but I'm convinced it sucks a day out of me every time I wear it. Twice I've been told I'm going to be sent too some high speed school to learn something necessary for the battalions success, twice nothing has come of it. The first was for a three week electronics course for the new equipment we're getting. Somebody has to know how to set it up and calibrate it. The other was for the battalions "safety guy." I'm beginning to think I should have stayed at home, as I could have. I was just thinking that I would do some good and be of service. Sigh. Oh yea, now I've got some active duty retirement board reviewing "my packet" as I'm "over 20" and have been an E-7 for almost eight years. "Move up or move out." Fooey. All the comments, assurances, and good wishes have been greatly appreciated. Though at first it was impossible to "get here," now I can do so pretty much daily, so I'll try to do that. Regards, Eric
