Both have genuine mother of pearl grips. The Iver Johnson doesn't always completely index and sometimes shave's lead so you have to be careful that no one is standing directly to the side of the shooter's gun hand or they might get stung. They were produced up until the start of WW II, but if your grandfather-in-law carried it in WW I, that narrows the range down considerably.

I don't know that it belonged to my grand-father-in-law, but to my father-in-law. My father-in-law just gave me the two handguns in the same box and told me that the Colt was his fathers. My wife remembers she and her brother playing with the Iver Johnson as kids and lived to tell about it. My first handgun back in the '50's was an IverJohnson.I got the Smith as a gift. I ll keep it for old times sake. Kowsky Raider.
