I can't figure out why so much elevation is necessary at 100M. If I file the front sight down, there probably won't be enough left for a decent sight picture. what gives ?

FAL Question |

Hello All, I took my FAL clone (Chilean parts kit/DSA receiver) to the range today and had a problem sighting in at 100M. In order to do so, the front sight
had to bottom out, and the rear sight had to be placed at the 600M setting. If the rear sight was placed at 100M, I had to hold 2 feet high. This was done
using Pakistani L2A2 ball.

FAL's had different height front sights. These sights were denoted by the number of "dots" on them, as viewed from above.
To zero, it can sometimes take a different sight post- (FROM FAL FILES) Metrics: (measured from bottom of threaded post to top of pin, and top of pin to bottom of base) 2-dot Model C: 15.2 mm overall (used on G-1 and most subsequent metrics) 6.5 mm 'post height' (including base) '1' Model A: 16.6 mm overall (used on earlier high sightline metrics, such as Israeli and Argentine) 9 mm 'post height' (including base) FWIW: the FN-measured height only inlcudes the base thickness and pin height (it is the smaller of the two heights above). If you go through the mental gymnastics of the conversion to the G-1' sightplane (which is 3 mm lower than the earlier FAL-Canada versions) the Type B '1' has an equivalent post height of 6 mm. I know the Inch measurements. I had to extract the Metrics doing the math above. So, my extrapolation (read 'yank') is: Unmarked- 5.5 mm 1- 6.0 mm 2- 6.5 mm 3- 7.0 mm 4- 7.5 mm the difference between a 4-dot and a zero-dot is about 13 MOA Life is the crummiest book I ever read, there isn't a hook; Just a lot of cheap shots, pictures to shock, and characters an amateur would never dream up... |

Thank You very much, I also noticed there is a LOT of play in the rear sight, I ordered a replacement short rear sight from DSA. Hopefully, it'll be made
to closer tolerances.

Also, since I have a Chilean parts kit clone, I should replaced my 2-dot front sight with a 1-dot ?

If you have a new rear sight on order, I'd wait until after I installed that before I made a decision on changing the height of my front sight.
There's not *supposed* to be variation, but one never knows..... Life is the crummiest book I ever read, there isn't a hook; Just a lot of cheap shots, pictures to shock, and characters an amateur would never dream up... |

That reminds me. I need to order a real Israeli HB rear sight for my HB. I'm having to run my current front sight so high it wiggles more than I think it
should.
