I favor the 15 minute rule cause I sell a lot of guns on gunbroker, makes it like any real auction you would go to. Even ebay has got away from sniping
in that you can bid a higher price than the current price and it only comes into play if the bid goes up. What I don't like is reserve prices, I typically
won't even open up an auction to look at it if it has a reserve price. I figure place the opening bid at the lowest bid you will accept or take your
chances.

Cisco wrote:Not so. A "sniper's" goal is to get in the very last bid - period. As you said, an item with a "current bid" of $5 showing can have a higher "proxy" bid (like $10) waiting in reserve. However, a "snipe" bid over $10 in the last seconds of an auction will win out. The sniper just has to take a gamble on what he or she thinks is the highest "proxy" amount the other bidder may have in place. I have seen eBay auctions won by "snipers" by as little as 1 cent over the current "high bidder's" proxy bid. On the other hand, if the "sniper" puts in a last second bid of $9.99 - he loses. eBay may have made it a little more expensive for snipers, but it is still a common practice. I've also seen it used to "punish" opposing bidders by driving up the price at the last minute and using up their proxy bids. It's all about "working the system" for some people....

As an occasional GunBroker seller, I couldn't care less about the 15 minute rule, but I don't use reserves or play games and I'm not really in it
to turn any kind of real profit as I'm not a dealer or "E-Business". I list the gun starting at the fair minimum price I want for the gun,
usually at or a little less than I have in it and let people bid what they feel it's worth. I use GB just to move out some guns that I'm done with or
lost interest in, and I consider myself an honest seller and describe my guns 100% with as many pics as possible. I usually sell what I list on GB and if it
doesn't sell I just hold on to it. I have had some wack buyers too, who I feel get a great deal and then send me irate e-mails because there was some
unseen scratch or what they feel was an unlisted defect on a $100 130 year old rifle or revolver, such as a tiny black spot on the bolt,a ding in the wood or a
spot of frost inside the action........I mean come on people! It would take 50 pages for me to describe every little speck of dust on an 1871 Swiss Vetterli
listed as a project gun for $110!
As a buyer/bidder, even on Auction Arms, Ebay or whatever, I just place the highest bid I feel the gun or item is worth and let it ride. Rarely do I up the bid. I used to get into the "gotta have it" wars and ended up paying lots more than I wanted, but now I have enough guns to keep me happy for a long time, plus finding and buying ammo and making time to actually shoot my many guns is a task unto itself these days, so there's not much I really "NEED" but more just interesting stuff like antique revolvers that I enjoy picking up on the auctions here and there. |

I wish that I could find more Sellers like yourself, Stan
it would be a pleasure doing business with you Sir your attitude for business should be Basic 101 for beginning Sellers, as well as those other so-called 'knowledgeable' entrepreneurs a modest profit on any item is more than fair but far too many GB Sellers' sole intent is to maximize each and every auction by listing ridiculous high reserves or extreme shipping fees, and the like, hoping to snag an unsuspecting Buyers having weak moments if a Seller frequents the auction sites long enough sooner or later he'll be on the receiving end of a feeding frenzy on one of his wares but he shouldn't expect that each and every time out I'll just stick with my one time proxy bid, and should I win - fine, if not, it's wise to move on to the next auction Bob |

I guess I don't consider that sniping if you have a higher bid in reserve.

Hmm....I've never used any (gun) auction site other than GB....so maybe I shouldn't have posted. My aversions to other sites comes mainly from hearing
"people buy special computer programs that provide an advantage when it comes to sniping." There may not be much to that other than a fast internet
connection....I don't know.
For me, if someone bids early on something, I am less likely to bid at all. I don't know if this is true for everyone. I feel the "15 minute rule" levels the playing field, as then a slow computer/connection isn't an issue. Although I've bought many guns from GB, I've never sold any. Anyway....have a nice day fellas.....my 5th. skydive went pretty well....other than me slipping off the strut of the plane....have my hands gotten that weak? I guess I'd better shoot some more handguns, and get
some hand strength back up! LOL. Maybe I should bid on a .500 S&W?

well hpc -
just so happens that there is an auction on GB (one of several, actually) for an 8 1/2 ported barrel that only has 9 days left on it that leaves you plenty of time to 'snipe' on it

I like to "snipe", and GunBroker's rule tends to tame down the sniping somewhat. It doesn't really bother me, I accept it for what it is and
work around it. You can pseudo-snipe by entering your bid at about 15 minutes, and 3 seconds. If no one else notices, the auction will end on time, and you
just might snag the item.
