I would like to make the case with our financial advisors and my wife for investing in Garands and maybe carbones as part of our long term investment strategies. Please understand I'm not trying to make a huge profit but we are moving more towards more secure investments. What factors should I consider? IMHO opinion, I think that the value of Garands will not depreciate over time and ultimately will appreciate even allowing for inflation.. What circumstances coud occur in the future that would work against this plan and how likely are they to happen in your opinion. Thanks

What's going to take a great leap up sooner is .30-'06 surplus, when the CMP runs out of HXP. Just about any .308 surplus is selling in the $0.60 per round neighborhood, and CMP is selling HXP for much less than that. When I started shooting High Power Service Rifle in 1978, just about any functioning Garand had a price tag on it of about $400. In the early 1990's that price was down around $100 with all the rifles returning from Korea and other countries. Slowly the price has crept up. Just about any functioning Garand now has a price tag on it of about $500. Nice, original Garands, people are asking $800+. I believe the continuing availability through CMP has depressed Garand prices. When CMP runs out, I expect a bump up. There may be some more price drops, then recovery if a large number of Garands were to be dumped on the US market. There are supposed to still be large quantities in several countries, and while they are reportedly unimportable under current law, you never know what the future holds. The price of Garands right now feels about right to me, the price of Carbines seems to be irrationally high, and CMP's price on ammo seems way low, but supply and demand eventually rule.
