I'm about to purchase 2,000 bullets and can't decide whether to go with the steel core or the lead core bullets.
The price is pretty much the same.

How accurate are SS109 steel core bullets? |

How accurate are SS109 steel core bullets compared to conventional BTHP bullets of the same weight?

Are the BTHP's match bullets? If so, they should be the most accurate. Usually the base is not as consistent on military bullets.

"accuracy" is entirely up to you, the best you can expect from your ammunition and rifle is consistancy.

The SS 109s I've shot aren't particularly accurate. They can't hold a candle to the Sierra 69 gr match bullet. Fortunately my Colt M4 carbine is
amazingly accurate when I hang a 10X scope on it.

Was just curious as to the accuracy of steel cores compared to lead core mil-spec FMJBTs. (more accurate, less accurate, same)
BTW, got 'em today. They may not be match grade but they sure are purdy. I'll work up some loads of various powder charges with Varget and AA2495BR since these are the powders I currently have. |

Accuracy is of course a relative concept. You have to remember that, for one, these are military bullets. They are made, not just in bulk, but by the
BILLIONS. Also, the more different parts to a bullet, in this case, jacket, steel core, lead core, the more difficult it is do build a perfect bullet. On
another note, I have found that my pet load, for accuracy anyway, is a speer case, cci SRM primer, 24.8 grains of win 748, and a lee factory crimp. Your
results may vary.

My pistol and rifle are only tools. I am the weapon.

Thanks for sharing your favorite load, I'll try it as soon as I have some Win-748.

The SS109's being steel-core, are somewhat longer than a commercial lead-core bullet of the same weight. Being longer, they need a faster twist to fully
stabilize them. If you have a barrel with a 1:7 twist, I'd say get the SS109's. If your twist rate is slower, get the commercial version.
