Query regarding loose MN44 magazine floorplates ?

They came in the laminated wood with all matching numbers with the magazine floorplates being renumbered to match. The floorplates seem a little loose and rattles a bit and also the hinge pin that holds the floorplate/follower assembly to the trigger guard/magazine housing moves laterally when pushed. In comparison with my thicker stocked Romanian 1953 MN44 carbine, with its magazine floorplate & hinge pin being pretty sturdy and not budging . My question then, ..... is this a war-time production issue or is there a simply remedy to my loose magazine floorplate and hinge pin issue ?

Remember that by time the Romanian rifle was built, they had been in production for nearly a decade in one country or the other and I suppose the later built rifles had better quality control and were not built under wartime stress conditions. It would also have something to do with the particular rifles history of being issued and used, and how much use it had. Also, every time an item like a rifle is taken down for a complete cleaning, unstocked from the wood, and such, that puts wear and tears on the fit of the parts where they meet the wood, bolt threads get rounded off,and the like. For that reason, I do not take all my rifles down all the way, except for once a year, if they have been fired a lot. When I first get them, they are taken all the way down for cleaning and close inspection and marking of part numbers on the various parts (like on a Garand) and everything is checked that concerns safety and such. Some of my rifles that don't get shot much may go for several years before being completely taken down again. Of course this depends on how much they have been fired or taken out and exposed to the elements such as rain, snow, mud and such. And if they had any corrosive rounds put thru them, it is more frequent also. I ALWAYS clean for corrosive ammo while still at the range and will often several solvent saturated swabs thru them on a weekly basis and keep them oiled up when I am shooting them frequently. But the constant takedown of the rifle is what wears out the fit in a lot of them. Curt

Adjusting / modifying the spring catch can also help. There are milled and also sheet metal spring-type ones. With cross pins, if they are so loose as to possibly fall out, you can remove them and bend them slightly in the middle. Re-installing them then will place them under a little friction and they should stay in place. Regards.
