First time I have ever had one of my Mosins hot enough to actually boil, still shot well and accurate, just finally got too hot to handle. I now know how

I have done the same thing with Mausers before. Clean them up the best you can get them the normal way, then take them to the range and shoot the living
daylights out of them, using at least thirty rounds fired as fast as you can work the action and reload with stripper clips. You will be surprized at the
amount of soaked in cosmoline and grease that surfaces when the rifle gets hot. Then while it is still hot, put on a pair of gloves and take a rag and wipe it
down good again and use mineral spirits on it as it cools. After about three sessions of this, most of it will be gone. But that was back in the days of six
cents per round Turk ammo!

I recall a post by Cabinetman (a year or so ago?) showing a cross section of a butt stock. The cosmoline penetrated about 2/3 of the way through it! At that
point I gave up on ever getting it ALL out. I just wipe off any that seeps out from firing and heating it up.
