Does anyone know if the Germans ever tried to repair bulged barrels? My recently acquired 88 (south american parts gun) has what looks like about 8 or 10 "triangle" stampes all around the diameter of the muzzle at the last half inch of the barrel. Looking down the bore there is ZERO rifling at this last half inch of the bore, it swallows any type JS Yugo 8mm or Turk 8mm round up to the case neck, yet the rest of the bore slugs in at .3215.

So, was my barrel counterbored, or did it once have a bulge that was repaired, then counterbored? The triangular stamps around the circumfrence of the barrel, is that signifying how deep it was counterbored if it was, or or those the tool marks from whatever was used to squeeze the bulge out of the barrel, if that's what it was. Anyone encountered this? Thoughts? Opinions?

Gunfreak25: A very good question. In the process of dismantling ca. 80 Gew 88 parts rifles, I do not recall seeing any of the triangular markings you described on the muzzle. While I certainly cannot say that it was never done (and your rifle seems to demonstrate that it was), it does not seem to have been a commonplace arsenal procedure. To undertake the type of repair you are describing, it would be necessary to completely disassemble the rifle and remove the barrel tube. With all of that effort, I wonder why the arsenal workers didn't simply replace the barrel. Perhaps other forum members might have some insight into this.

Thanks for the reply. A friend of mine suggested that perhaps it was done in an effort to "peen" the end of the barrel to expand the metal so it would have a tighter fit with the end of the tube. With how very thin these barrels are, I can only imagine that these deep peen marks would definately have dented the rifling, so it was then counterbored to remove the dented section of rifling.

Hey Plevna, would you have an 1888 cleaning rod you could sell?

I personally fail to see why the Germans would resort to peening the barrel to create a tighter fit for the end of the barrel tube. I should think that if the tube were that loose it would have been rejected as an unusable part.

Original Gew 88 cleaning rods are almost as scarece as winning lottery tickets. I should do a "nose count" but believe I have only three good cleaning rods on the 30+ 88s I have in my collection. It is my understanding that Gun Parts Corporation sells reproduction rods but I have never ordered one so cannot say how well they do -- or don't -- fit.

German armorys would never counter bore or attempt to repair a barrel other than cutting a crown. Replacement only. Turks also replaced barrels. Don't know what they did in SA.

Can't say about the barrel. The replacement rods work alright and can be made to look authentic. You can bet if I ever find another original cleaning rod, I'll grab it.

V ; This is old hat , but YES the german depot system DID counterbore gew88 and gew98 barrels. I have two gew88's so counterbored and both are matching period condition rifles. I have had two and still have one counterbored gew98 - matching as well. Long ago collectors to include TP & 'simsonsuhl' shared our data in these respects. There will be found a crown proof applied to the barrel step at the receiver on gew98's so repaired and on the receiver of gew88's so repaired. On the mannlicher forum at gunboards do a search and you'll find that thread with pics.

Bill, you are absolutely correct, the marking on the receiver of Imperial German barrels signifying counterboring and inspection is plain to see. As far as "repairing" a bulged barrel? It can't be done successfully, accuracy and even safety of the barrel may be destroyed by a bulge.

PS to Bill, I can't seem to find the GB discussion though I remember it well. A lot of posts from more than a couple of years ago seem to have been removed, can you provide a link? This would have been about 4 or 5 years ago maybe?

So technically I was right even though I was wrong. The Germans would conterbore but would never try to repair a bulged barrel.

Vlad ; I would not doubt that the germans would have repaired a bulged muzzle if the bulge was limited in that it did not coocur under the front sight base. By counterboring such damage it no longer poses a hazard as it takes no operating pressure with no rifling . Then draw filing the shape serviceability or some similar means would be possible , economical and restore accuracy. I would not put that past them then.
