I'm new here, and would like some information about this bayonet I have. My grandfather gave this to me some years ago. I know it fits a Model 98 Mauser, but what model is it? How old is it? The markings on the cross guard: BZ 11 on the left side; 618 on the top, in the barrel clearance groove. These are the only markings on the outside. Both grips are marked (in pencil) on the inside: 48. This number is repeated on the tang, and the sheet-metal piece that wraps around behind the grips and over the top. Posts: 924 (06/24/09 06:43 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	The bayonet is a 84/98 made by Germany . the BZ is a unit mark but dint know what it means. should be a date on the spine and a makers mark on the ricasso, if it were WWI but you don not mention them So it is a WWII model commercial as there are no waffenampts on the pommel or makers mark, early WWII. The commercials were used by Police, Post office, customs etc. so not private people but militia units/ Carl www.old-smithy.info

Posts: 925 (06/25/09 06:35 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	If you go to www.old-smithy.info there is a large section dedicated to the 84/98 that gives all the makers codes and many of the known variations, including pictures of most not all of the makers marks etc. So far I havent made up a listing of unit markings on tehm but maybe shoudl start digging out the Police marks I have info on and making up a sheet for them as well.
