There was an elite division of crack German mountain troops that had the Edelweiss as an insignia, but I don't know whether it was just a patch or more of
a pin like you have there. I believe they were instrumental in the Greek and Crete campaigns!

The German Gebirgsjager wore a metal Edelweiss emblem on their caps and a oval embroidered patch on their sleeves. The metal insignia has a dull grey finish.
Some fancy version had a two-construction with a pin-back insert denoting the flower's center. The pin is about 2" long, and the design is just the
flower, two leaves and a short stem.
Adding to Aubullets's comment, the Gebirgsjagers were also heavily involved in southern Russia in the Caucasus campaign. The blue ring behind the flower in your photo's pin makes me think that it might be some sort of a "sweetheart" pin as worn by someone with a family member serving in the mountain troops. |

I purchased it on Ebay for a few bucks. It was listed as an Original WW II German Edelweiss Stickpin.
Thanks Joe |

Does the inscription say 25 Jahre? That means 25th year in German, sort of like an anniversary or years of service..

...In a Gebirgsjaeger unit, I'd assume. The Bundeswehr still has alpine troops, and some of their uniform items like their headgear is unique to the
Gebirgsjaegers. Perhaps that pin is for post WWII service, to include reserve service.

I had purchased a late post WWII M43 variant bundeswhehr cap that came with an Eidelweiss pin hand sewn onto it. That pin closely resembled those touted as
WWII pins. I sold it as a post war pin.
