Thanks to the mods for leaving this post up for a couple of days, I guess I'll just keep an eye out for something on auction.

I see them listed on GunBroker all the time, and on AuctionArms fairly often as well. You might have a look at those possible sources if you haven't
already.

Suggest maybe you give some guideline as to what condition you want and what you will pay. I have several, some mint, unissued, possible only factory test
fired, several excellent but maybe issued almost no wear, and then several with some slight wear on edges and mounting of bayonet at muzzle. You will pay top $
for the mint unissued ones and the others are still 90% or more and still aren't CHEAP rifles.

Tmygun: My suggestion is to just ask the knowledgeable members of this board. "What is the fair retail buying price // value// of a mint unissued unfired
91 Arge". I'm sure that someone will throw a few numbers into the hat. So let's hear what they think.

Unissued, unfired and scrubbed? I wouldn't sell any of mine for less than $400-500, and add at least a hundred for a good tiger stripe stock. With crest
intact the sky may well be the limit these days, even if only 90%, in my opinion!
Just a note to show my already obvious prejudice, I don't know of a more finely made rifle, short of total custom in the five figure territory, period! Older design sure, but better materials than some latter models, and more thread engagement in the receiver ring as well. To me it has the feel of a fine Penn/Kent long rifle, partly due to the slimmer stock afforded by the in-line magazine. Ergonomically, it fits me better than almost any other rifle! Also in my opinion, it may well be worth waiting for a deal to come along on the auction sites, from a dealer willing to honestly state bore condition! Short of that, get what you can where you can, as they ain't makin' any more of them, or much of anything else at this quality level!!! I have too many and I ain't sellin' any!!! 'nuf said. |

I have one on lay away right now. Excellent plus condition. Possibly unissued. All matching. Tiger stripe in the butt stock. I think I'm getting it at a
steal. $375. I've seen a lot of them in lesser condition go for a lot more. I'll be sure to post pictures when I get it paid off, about the 18th of
July. You can still find good ones if you look hard enough.

My 100% agreement with Aubullet! I guess you noticed am in no hurry to part with any of mine even at a price 2X what Pat 1 mentioned in the above. I sold two
Arge's 6 years ago, a rifle and a carbine and still regret it. I looked at GB and there are a mix of cut down sporters asking 600 to $800 to a few very
nice un-bubbad ones in the $500 range. There are even a few that claim to be unissued. I really like the way this thread is going so let's thank the Mods
who are letting it stay open. I think there may be more info coming out here for the good of all of us.

Speaking of thread engagement, I was a little worried at first, should I be?
Mine is threaded into the receiver deeper than any of my other rifles. It protrudes past the ring on the inside. shotout

Got an Argentine!!!! | ||

I just won an 1891 Argentine Mauser on Gunbroker. The guy says it looks almost new with an excellent bore and all matching. The deals are still out there, no
need to pay an arm and a leg if you're patient
To all of my Argentine Mauser friends on the look out for a nice specimen, I say patience my friends, patience .
I'm happy .

Congratulations, you will like it!
Yes, deals can still be found, but I wouldn't sell any of my nice ones for that price. Hopefully, the crest has been neatly scrubbed without digging too deep into the receiver ring. Post us some pictures when you get it, if you can please!!! |

I got lucky two or three years ago. Found one in a local store rack listed at $175 (next to a pricier 1909.) Made sure they recognized it as an antique, and
managed to walk out the door with it for $150.
Seemed like a steal even then. Crest removed, and the bolt is a mismatch, but it was so pristine- beautiful wood with all the stamps, clean blue metal and perfect bore- even my young son was fascinated by it (George Washington and muskets were his thing at the time.) As previously stated, there is an obvious quality of manufacture, though it's a standard infantry weapon, that you'd be hard pressed to find on a modern custom rifle. Oddly enough, I have not found shooting this rifle to be as pleasant an experience as gazing upon it. It's pretty vicious for a long rifle. Victor "Always carry a firearm east of Aldgate, Watson." |

I'm surprised to hear about the recoil. Surely it can't be anywhere near Turk 8mm recoil, can it
? Anyway, I got my Midway order today with Lyman reloading dies, Lee case trimmer,
and one box of 180gr. Prvi brand 7.65x53 ammo. I also plan on forming some 30-06 brass into Argentine.
Now the wait for my new rifle .
Happy shooting!!!! Tmygun

No, the recoil isn't as bad as Turk 8mm. It has never seemed too bad at all to me, but if you are reloading, you can make the recoil be anything that you
like it to be.
Just a tip, I have always found the .311" Sierra 180 g Spitzer to be a very accurate projectile in my rifles, though it is a bit pricey. I'll be interested to know how much you'd be willing to sell your new rifle for, after you've had it a while and decided how much you really like it! LOL!!! |

Recoil issues? Here's what we do with a friend: We load the 7.65 cases with 7-8 gr. of shotgun powder and use large pistol primers; bullets are .312 150 or
180gr. lead cast (Both Spitzer or R.N.) with no gas check. Excellent plinking rounds for distances up to 130 yards. Set your 1891 rear sight @ 600 meters and
you'll consistently hit the target @ 100 yards with the same recoil and noise you can expect from a .38 Special shot from a .357 lever gun. Speed remains
below 1,000 fps and little if any leading can be observed after 20 rounds.

To Aubullet
The lugs are engages at the right time and place. My bolt doesn't have much front to rear end play. maybe two or three sheets of paper thickness. You can see where the bolt head comes against the barrel/chamber end. ![]()

shotout wrote:Exactly how can that be if as you say: " Mine is threaded into the receiver deeper than any of my other rifles. It protrudes past the ring on the inside." Obviously, I'm not getting the picture here, of what the situation was, that you were originally trying to convey! Past what ring on the inside? I had assumed you were saying that your barrel was threaded clear through your receiver ring, which would then obviate any chance of your bolt entering the receiver ring from the rear to enable engagement of your locking lugs, which of course would be an impossible situation in a functioning rifle! My original statement merely referenced the fact that the 1891 Argentine Mauser barrel/receiver engagement threaded section was longer than that found on subsequent (more modern) Mauser rifles, by up to one tenth of an inch (0.100") as compared to the M98, and eighty thousandths (0.080") more than the M93-96, thus offering longer engagement than the later models. |

Sorry I can't explain it the way you would like to understand it.
The rifle shoots ok and I'll just leave it at that. Crest has not been scrubbed and I gave $150 OTD. Last month. shotout ![]()

Maybe this will help. Pull the bolt out, look into the receiver. you see the end of the barrel screwed into the receiver.
The portion of the receiver that is around the barrel/chamber when it is screwed in where the bolt head meets the end of the barrel. All my other rifles, the barrel end that the bolt meets is flush with that part of the receiver. This barrel is screwed in past flush toward the rear of the receiver. The bolt closes all the way against the chamber/barrel. I don't know how else to explain it. shotout
