Thanks for your efforts to try and clarify your earlier statement which I found to be a bit confusing. Now I think that I understand what it was you were actually referencing. The issue stems from the fact that the Mauser M89's through M96's do not have any form of interior ring within the receiver ring, that acts as a barrel stop, like that found inside the receiver ring of the M98. So yes, the rear end of the barrel is fully exposed to the face of the bolt in the earlier models, but partially hidden in the M98. Perhaps you had not seen this before, so that it looked quite different than a M98 to you, thus you stated that "It protrudes past the ring on the inside." My misunderstanding derived from the fact that there is no ring on the inside of an M91, so I wrongly thought that you meant it protruded past the entire receiver ring.
