Posts: 1 (06/29/09 04:54 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tags : None I have a series 4 VZ24 with only the date {1940} on top of the receiver Romanian issue {I think}and two lines on the receiver. Serial is PP XXX The end of the barrel is two pieces. I believe teh series 4 is the most common of the vz 24s. The barrel has been fitted with a unrifled 1.75 inch long cylinder machined to the same outside diameter of the barrel. The cylinders bore is .360-365 inch in diameter. The actual rifling on the rifle stops 2 and 5/32 inch down from the end of the muzzle/cylinder sleeve. The cylinder has the front sight mounted to it and it also has the hard to find VZ sight protector. It sort of reminds me of an incomplete compensator thankfully incomplete. Does anyone know the purpose of the sleeve/cylinder? This rifle is so clean it appears to be unissued. When I cleaned the barrel not one bit of blue copper fouling showed on the patches and they went in clean and came out clean. The stock is totaly free of use marking. The front sight base is simply mounted on a tube which is sleeved flush over the barrel, which has a final step for this purpose. Every VZ-24 I ever owned had this, although sometimes you have to look very hard to see it. GEW 98 rifles also use this front sight arrangement. The unrifled section is a counter-bore, applied to worn or damaged rifles, especially if they were being over-hauled or refurbished. They are far from rare on Romanian used VZ-24 rifles. They are also extremely common on Russian M-38 carbines, and somewhat less so on Russian M-44 carbines. This procedure was done to restore accuacy to heavily used rifles. It should make it shoot nearly as good as new. If your rifle was refurbished before long term storage, it would look almost like new. During refurbishment, rifles were often lapped, with lead being poured molten onto a plug at the end of a cleaning rod. After hardening, the lead lap is pushed partially out of the bore, and coated with a very fine abrasive. It is then worked back and forth in the bore, to remove fouling and corrosion. It is a very old and traditional proceedure, used world wide for over a century in breech loading firearms. Enjoy your fine rifle. Last Edited By: junkbug 06/30/09 06:37 PM. Edited 2 times.

The rifle appears to be original not an arsenal rework, no pits/corrosion in the metal which would show up under a "re blue", no sign of wear/shine on any of the metal and the wood is absolutely unblemished and appears to be finished beyond military finishes. With a mfg date of 1940, strange it was not issued. Could it be a CHERRY? As to extensions on barrels, I put twenty years in the Navy, Ordnance/weapons department/gunnery and saw a lot of firearms of all types, ours, theirs and others. I am now 71 YO and have seen many more, shot a lot of them but I never saw a sleeved K98,93, 09, 01, {96, 38 my favorites}, 88, 91 or Rusky of any model.. Maybe they were done so good it was just missed but in cleaning the barrels the loose fitting patch would have been noticed when it came to the long oversized unrifled area. I have cleaned a lot of rifles, handguns and shotguns and this is the first one I have ever seen. Live and learn. Thanks.
