Apparently I was wrong. I found this little baby mosin recently. (Camera died or I would've tried for a better pic) 1943 Izzy M38 Light pitting in the bore, but it has not been counterbored and passes the bullet test. Finish was cosmoline and after many hours and hours and hours of patiently sweating and cleaning it , I found that apparently that was the finish. Loads of cosmo. Little flakes of shellac here and there. I think I'll just let it shed on its own. It seemed a little steep (and if there was going to be a gun show in the next 6 months around here, I'd just have waited), but then I looked for some online and they were pretty scarce and all in the $140-170 range. . So after S/H and transfer fee I may have saved a few bucks if I'd ordered it. I am terrible about impulse buys , but I did go home and do a little homework this time.. Matched receiver, bolt and magazine. All stamped. Oddly, no import markings. None on the receiver or the side of the barrel where I normally find them.. Without import markings and counter bore? I'd say you did very well, actually. You don't see M-38s in that condition, especially lately. Congrats on a nice rifle!

I guess that is why I am here, learnin, especially since I don't think that will be my last mosin. Found import mark, very subtle though. They put it right in front of the nose cap on the bottom of the barrel, so if you haven't removed the cleaning rod it is almost impossible to see. Took it to the range today. Very satisfied. Not going to be using it for any competition shooting, but it was dead on at 50 yards and quite good at 100. Ran some russian silver tip, brown bear fmj and sp and that heavy ball czech stuff with the yellow tip. Best accuracy with the czech though it had some bolt stick issues. Not too bad for me, at 250 lbs I just slap the bolt a bit and it works just fine. Russian was the most fun. Stout recoil and fireballs that eventually shredded the flourescent "safety line" they have set up in front of the firing line at the range. Brown bear was ok, though the 208 grain sp stuff was a little rough on the shoulder. going to pick up some batteries for the camera tonight. Posts: 37 (07/10/09 06:24 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	A good way to get rid of the cosmo is by using aresol brake cleaner on all the metal (remove from stock first, of course!), and then use Simple Green and a lot of elbow grease on the wood. I do this for all my cosmo soaked MilSurps, the results are always good! Just remember to lightly oil all the metal afterwards, 'cause the brake cleaner strips ALL the oil from it.

I would not recommend it for wood care of any sort regardless of what the bottle says. I would tell you what I use but I even think at times it is too strong and as a result have been watering it down big time. Murphy's Oil Soap, not the spray, just the bottle type watered down heavy with warm water is sometimes more than enough. I just try and keep stock cleaning to a minimum to retain the original look and not have something that might look beautiful to you but not anything like the original protection it had. Talking about this in relation to refurbs may make some people think why bother but I just think they deserve respect and originality as much as possible. Yeah I know the arguments about them being a dime a dozen but they aren't going to be around forever and if we don't at least try and keep them original at some point we may never know what they are supposed top look like! I know this will bring a flock of other right ways to clean stocks and frankly this subject belongs on the stock cleaning forum so if this thread goes to far move it there I would say or lock it up. Cosmo appears to be out of the woodwork (even after running about 60 rounds through , it was no longer sticky). The shellac remnants (not that there was much to begin with)have not dealt well with time at the range. I suppose the heat may have made them curl and flake some more.I had already given all of the metal a once over and after running a 20 gauge brush through the chamber while hot the bolt stick has subsided. The only issue I have is the foregrip appears to have warped slightly so the front curves up a bit. Any suggestions? I wanted to post more photos, but photobucket is down for maintenance so I cannot show pics of this particular issue right now. Side note , i posted bullet test pics and the cartouche in the july aquisitions section. How do I stop some big mean mother hubbard from tearing me a structurally superfluous new behind? The answer is a gun, and if that don't work use more gun.
