Q-1 Has anyone used a food saver to seal rifles and ammo for storage ? If so did it work? Q-2 Has anyone used Fogging Oil to prep said rifles ? disassembly and spaying them down well the reassemble for bagging in food saver. Fogging Oil- used for long term engine storage by removing spark plugs spraying into cylinders and turning the motor a feww times to to keep the pistons from ceasing in the motor. Something i have been thinking of trying just thought i would get some feedback....

I would take em down and coat them with RIG(rust inhibiting grease). Not to be a nanny but don't you mean seize not cease? Ash Iron Construction

Posts: 5433 (07/07/09 11:58 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I can't recommend Eezox enough.......I have rifles I haven't even touched in 4 or 5 years that sit in an open rack and not a speck of rust on them. Some that I haven't gotten around to "Eezoxing" yet, I find rust in the bores out of nowhere and many of them haven't seen a round of corrosive while in my ownership. I hope in the next few days while I have time at home to at least run a patch soaked with Eezox down the bore of all my rifles.

I took a lesson from the Russians and wrapped the rifle in waxed paper to prevent the sharp edges from cutting the bag but it wasn't enough. That was the limit of my experience and didn't dare try again after SWMBO found out I used 5 feet of her sealing bags. DOH Bob

This way if the box may break open the gun has half a chance of survival.

Over time, water vapor will diffuse around and into everything in there. Changes in temperature will cause it to condense and vaporize again. If you leave even a tiny spot unprotected by grease or oil, the water will eventually find it and react with the metal. Desiccant will help a lot, but if there is not enough of it to absorb every last molecule of water rust will result.

Posts: 5434 (07/08/09 08:16 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I try to avoid "sealing" anything around my guns at all costs, I even draped my rifle racks in plastic drop cloths and all it did was give somewhere for hotter air and moisture to accumulate. I live in a dryer climate (rocky PA soil, climate controlled dehumidified basement) so it's not like the air is heavy with moisture where I store my guns, but it's odd when and where rust will strike. To me, open air in my basement is the best option for me. My strong theory is that rifles that have old pin prick pitting or frost inside the bore or on the metal, have the highest tendancy to rust again. I have a Mosin that has some very old rust pitting on the receiver, that has been blued over, but somehow rust formed again in these very same pits. The rest of the metal was fine. Rust has been the bane of my gun collecting life, and it seems to have a mind of it's own. I have a 0% blue 91/30 that I have fired hundreds of rounds of corrosive through and it has bever had a spec of rust on it.........but then out of nowhere I'll find rust in the bore of a mint bored 03 Springfield that I might have fired 5 rounds through half a decade ago and thoroughly cleaned, but somehow, someway rust found it's way into the bore.

If moisture got in there it might not get out. Why not use cosmoline grease? Just keep the dust off and wipe after handling.
