Bought some ready made 270gn fitted with gas checks a few weeks ago (many of my friends at the rifle range are getting into lead projectiles and have suggested
I should try too - so I will). I also had a full tin and a bit of some AR2205 (equivalent to IMR4227) that was not getting used since I sold the Marlin 357mag.
Looking at some data I should be able to load them up to 2000fps (+ ?) which gives them the same muzzle energy as a 308!
I'm using 35gns which leaves a large empty space inside the case. I thought I'd experiment a little bit with primers and filler. I loaded some with normal primers (CCI200) and no filler, some with normal primers and filler, some with magnum primers (CCI) and no filler and some with magnum primers and filler. The CCI200 loads without filler were slight hangfires whereas the magnum primers without fillers weren't. They all shot to the same level of accuracy off a bench - no doubt the hangfire loads would have been worse off-hand. Groups ranged from 2 to 5" at 100 yards and only 4 to 5" at 200 yards - go figure? The last 3 shoots I fired at 100 yards went into just over an inch.
I used half a cotton ball (2.5gns) as filler per 'filled' case. Every shot with one of these looked like a pillow exploded
, but didn't leave any residue in the barrel (I checked after each shot).
I still have 80 left to try and find a good load - if I find it I may buy a mold (there's so many variables though - not sure I want to punish myself).
