Industrial Purple Question |
Lead | |
|
Is it OK to use industrial purple for a light clean? What I'm worried about is if this stuff will take the stain off or not. I've got a new Yugo
M24/47 that is just lightly covered in cosmolene and I don't want to have to restain it.
-Thanks |

AFAIK, there is no shellac involved in the stock, so I'd clean with wipedowns of WD40 to remove the cosmo, and follow with "91%" Isopropyl
Rubbing alcohol to remove the WD40.
The purple stuff is potent and you run the risk of discoloring the stock. |

Try Vaseline first. Smear on a generous coat & let it set overnight befor wiping it off. You would be amazed at the crud it will remove. If that
doesn't rmove the gunk then try something a little more agressive.

Try the vaseline first, then Acetone, then Lacquer Thinner if need be.
A 90% Alcohol wipedown after all of these is not a bad idea. Then, apply a coat of BLO or Tung-Oil, let it soak in, then wipe off the excess. Avoid water-based products if adequate cleaning can be done with the solvents alone.

I've got another rifle that has a somewhat shiny stock, its just that its kind of spotty, covering only about 2/3 of the stock. Do you think I should
remove this coating to make it look similar across the whole stock? If so, what could I apply to regain this lightly shiny look?

What type of rifle and/or finish?

Its a Yugo M24/47 with VERY nice wood. I described the finish as best as I could. Its hard to describe, kind of like describing what a tornado sounds like!
Here is a link with pictures of it from GunBroker: http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=140368073 I'd kind of like to have it with that slighlty shiny look that's already on the majorty of the rifle, it just seems to make the grain stand out that much more. - Thanks!

Looks like a nice mauser! I would try the vaseline trick again. Original finish should be oil. Afterwards I would stick with BLO. Give it a good rub down, wipe
off any excess after a couple of minutes. The rubbing of the BLO actually heats it slightly with friction & it will absorb into the stock a bit better.
Before the next coat use a little gun oil and #0000 wool to even out the finish. Repeat daily until the look becomes more uniform.

Tom's 3&1 Wax | ||

If you just want to dull down the shine you can apply a couple of coats of Tom's 3&1 wax. It will also waterproof your stock. I call it Gunny paste.
It's good stuff you can buy it here. www.thegunstockdoctor.com
