The markings are as follows on top of the barrel E. Remington & Sons. Ilion.N.Y bottom side of barrel 44s. On the left plate are the patents May3 1864 may7 June11 Nov 12 Dec 24 Dec31 1872 Sept 9 1873. It has a 32 inch octagonal barrel with rifling. it is a center fire. IT has a cresent but plate with a metal plate. It appears to be model 3 or 4 but don't know how to tell for sure on that or the caliber and when it would have been made

Hope you hang around and enjoy the great folks and good information to be found here. While this probably should have been posted in the Black Powder Cartridge Arms section, thus it may get moved there by a moderator, I'll go ahead and say what I know here. I'm unaware of any Model #3 Rem. RB sporting rifles, and the Model #4 was a rather small boy's rifle that would not be suitable for the cartridge your barrel marking (44S) suggests that yours takes. The Patent dates listed on the left wall of your receiver seem to indicate that yours is either a Model #1 or Model # 1 1/2, which would be appropriate for the .44 cal Remington Centerfire cartridge (bottleneck 44-77, 44-90 or 44-90 special). It is a safe bet that the rifle was made sometime before the turn of the century, but after the last patent date of 1873 that it bares. Actually, most all were made before 1890, with few made even as late as the late 1880's. You don't list a serial number, but typically it would be found on the lower action tang on later model rifles, while the earlier rifles would show it on the front of the receiver only visible after removing the forearm wood. You also don't list what kind of condition it is in, but if truly original, it is a very collectible firearm, and if in good condition may be quite valuable. Pictures would of course help immensely, but I would caution you to be very careful with this rifle, and do nothing that would detract from it's value until you find out for sure what you have~!!! All of the military one's were round and the sporter's almost all were octagon.It will probably be a #1 if military, if it's a #2 sporter you are very lucky, it's got a curved edge where it meets the stock, all the other ones are straight. The #1 sporters usually have octagon barrels, if a centerfire it may be 44 or 50 calibre.Those are great Black powder shooters. I owned one in 50-70, an ex-buffalo rifle.

The original poster did specify that his rifle has a 32" octagonal barrel, thus obviating military production. The "44S" stamped on the underside of the barrel indicates a factory chambering of one of the proprietary Remington .44 caliber family of cartridges, unless subsequently rechambered at some later date without being re-marked. You are quite correct, that it could also possibly be a Model #2 rifle, with the curved rear receiver/buttstock interface.

Posts: 222 Apr 29 10 5:17 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have a Norwegian one that was made by the Norway firm in 1883, it is almost identical to a 45/70 so I shoot it with BP loads. It shoots as well as my Shiloh and is a lot more fun, as the Shiloh is to dad-blamed heavy for an old man like me. If I were in doubt as to what cartage I would make a chamber cast and get a copy at the library or a friend of "Cartridges of the World " To be sure what I had. Most of the cartridges can be made from another modern one.

Posts: 2 Aug 6 10 8:54 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Ok I have one for you. My retired neighbor has a rifle he wants to get valued. Its quite the antique and the firing pin has been removed. The wording is very worn, but here is what I can make out E Remington & sons Ilton, NY CSA PAT 1864 MAY 7th June 14 NOV 4th DB 3131 1872 Sept 9th 1873 JAN 12th March 18th That is the only writing I can find on the rifle. I have not taken it apart. How would I go about trying to find the model type? Thanks for your time.

Posts: 6 Aug 26 10 8:29 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hi, The Ep on the side of the action (Egyptian Police) identify this rifle as a 43 Egyptian Remington. These are some of the earlier #1 remingtons. They generally look like they have been dragged behind a camel, however they often have very good bores and can be good shooters. These are the least valuable rollers. Although people often ask more, They usually sell for $400.00 or less....Thanks, John M.
