I just recently picked up a Criterion barrel from the CMP to install on my Model of 1917. The original barrel was trash and grouped 6" at 25 yds. Since I wanted a shooter and not a safe queen, rebarreling was my only option. The Criterion barrels are made by Kreiger and have all of their quality. They are already to install, parkerized with all of the cuts and timing marks installed. All I needed to do was to run a finish reamer in the chamber to get the headspace set. I got it from CMP for less than 2 bills.
I just spoke with Steve from Kreiger Barrels, asking about getting a barrel for my Pattern 14 rifle. It too has a sewer pipe for a barrel, and while not as bad as my Model of 1917, it definitely is not fun to shoot since the accuracy is hit or miss. Steve said they are currently working on a batch of barrels in .303 caliber for the P14 rifles and they should be done in a couple of months. I now have something to look forward to and will be able to add another shooter to my collection. Steve said he would contact me when they are ready and I'll post that news when I get it.
So for those of you wanting/needing to replace their barrels with something that will bring that old rifle back to life, start saving your pennies.
