Some one asked where did men who stormed ashore at Normandy on June 6, 1944 come from? They were descendants of the "once embattled farmers" who were willing to stand up to one of the finest armies in the world in 1775.

The modern histories of the American Revolution are so well written that these events seem much closer in time than they were. I'm wondering if there has ever been an explanation why the battle has been popularly known as the Battle of Bunker's Hill when most of the fighting occured on Breed's Hill? Perhaps they knew that U.S.S. Bunker Hill would be a more catchy name for an aircraft carrier 175 years later, than U.S.S. Breed Hill, which does sound a little degenerated.

The New England militia commanders received a written operations order to fortify Bunker Hill from the Massachussetts Committee of Safety. When they occupied the Charlestown Pennisula the Patriot leaders had a council of war and decided to move their forces further east on the pennisula to fortify Breed's Hill. The rationale was that Breed's Hill would enable them to place the British fleet in Boston Harbor under cannon fire, whereas occupation of Bunker Hill would not. The downside of this decision was that it was harder to resupply and re-enforce Breed's Hill, and it could more easily be cut off since troops on Bunker Hill could overwatch Charlestown Neck (the only entrance/exit), and Breed's Hill didn't. After the battle, the engagement was referred to in Patriot correspondence with the name of the hill in the original orders.
