I saw an old short barrel Carcano today (1917 stamped on the Receiver - $70) and looked down the barrel with
a bore light provided by the shop owner.
First off - I have lousy eye sight close up and forgot my reading glasses.
But - even if I had my glasses - can one tell if an old rifle has decent rifling by looking down the barrel that way ?
What do you look for ?
The Carcano had rifling that was shiny everywhere. I could see the grooves, but - how deep must they be ?
If I can see any grooves, is that enough for it to shoot reasonably well - I don't hunt, just range shoot
for the Hell of it.
