Posts: 59 Jun 8 11 6:34 PM active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I ran across a Rolling Block receiver and barrel. They look as though they have never been used. The receiver has a nice case hardening and the barrel has some light rust on the exterior the bore looks new and the witness mark is about 20 degrees off when I screw it into the action. I think the barrel is 50-70 but I have not checked it yet. Also I compared the barrel with an Army model and it's several inches longer. Than the Army. There is no serial number on the receiver. Posts: 410 Jun 9 11 7:23 AM active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Bannerman second is much much more likely. Bannerman bought up seconds and either assembled them himself or sold parts. There were a bunch of Krag receivers on the market a while back that definitely came from that source....and like yours, unnumbered. Now why it is a second likely isn't apparent to the eye, but usually were minor defects like threads started at the wrong point. Keep in mind that assembled rifles were to have all the screws perfectly aligned and if the thread was started wrong, they wouldn't line up. I know, big woopie ding dong right? Such were inspections back then, but makes no real difference to you as long as you don't try passing off as a Springfield assembled rifle. The pics show the shadow of where a rear sight once was on the barrel, so it isn't new as such. Given what you have, a period target rifle setup would be attractive to me.

Posts: 2349 Jun 13 11 10:31 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My 50-70 Springfield rolling block isn't serial numbered either. I don't think any of them were. There was an army and a navy model. I thought the Army model had the longer barrel, but I'm not sure.

Also it looks like the footprint of a Number One Remington Rolling Block rear sight The Springfields used the same sight as the 1868 and 1870 Trapdoors with a musket style sight base retained by a single screw. Could the barrel be from a New York contract R/B? JB

Posts: 58 Dec 21 11 10:20 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It appears civilian, but I'm not positive. If it is a Navy the barrel will have an anchor stamped on top in front of the alignment mark. I have one in 50-45 that I put together and the only problem I had was finding the correct rear sight. I tried a sight I had that fit and to my amusement tried it out and the rifle shot 6 foot high at 100 yards. I have since corrected the problem. You have a real 'dandy' of a rifle to start with and no matter what it is - it will please you when you get it together. I call mine a 'Frankenroller' since it's made up from a little of this and that.
