Posts: 120 Nov 7 11 6:08 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Hi all Just thought I'd post some before and after pics of my Ljungmann-when I originally bought it, it had a horrible dark walnut finish applied to it, but after using some heavy duty 1895 furniture stripper,she cleaned up real nice. The wood still retained the original tan stain, so all it took was 3 coats of BLO to bring her back to original era finish... (very accurate rifle too, a pleasure to shoot when I can source out the 6.5 Swede ammo)

Being this site is intended for collectors of Swedish arms in their original collectable condition I'll use your pictures to represent what Not to do. The Swedes used a walnut colored stain on their beech stocksets because they were not fond of the light color of the wood. In general refinishing a stockset is frowned upon because of the loss in value and diminished collector interest. A collector who found a rifle in the condition of yours would come here looking for info on how to best restore it to milspec. If you chose to return it to correct apperance there is plenty of info in the archieves on how to do it...Jim

Posts: 120 Nov 8 11 6:29 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hi MP1978, I was told by the original owner that the rifle had been (sloppily) refinished by himself in the walnut stain-every other AG42B I have seen has the "natural" Beechwood finish, so I am pretty happy with the way it turned out. Go ahead and use my pics for "educational purposes", but do me the favour of adding what I have just posted here.

Posts: 4319 Nov 10 11 11:27 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The only AG42B I've ever seen 'alive' was a rifle used by a father-son team at my range 3 - 4 years ago in a military match; the rifle bested the next most accurate rifle, a customized M96 (illegal for the match but the owner was a somebody in the club), by a wide margin and the AG had a honey-blond stock. Posts: 859 Nov 10 11 12:23 PM Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Beech wood is nearly white in its natural state . Not acceptable to the military . All Swedish beech stocks were stained . The stain varies greatly from light tan or honey color to dark brown & other shades in between . It seems the military started using the dark brown stain post WW2 , but not as dark as the first photos shown . Beech does not take an oil based stain very well . Alcohol based stains work best . It is unknown what the Swedish arsenal used to stain their beech stocks ????

You can see the attached wood strips to keep the handguard from breaking . Never messed with , restained or refinished , just as it came from the factory . Posts: 120 Nov 21 11 1:26 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanks for that rare pic of an unfinished AG42B handguard 318dodge...when you mention the original stain being a very light tan color, that is exactly what mine looks like now. Fortunantely, when I applied the stripper, it didn't leave the wood "in the white". The pics I took before make the rifle look a lot lighter than it really is, because of the flash. Here's another pic with it turned off, and you can see that the finish is actually a bit darker.... Thanks for everyone's feedback and comments-they are greatly appreciated!

My observation that a little info on what would be correct and how to do it is the place to start on a restorization project. Still your rifle is way better looking now. It will make a nice representative piece in your collection...Jim
