Posts: 260 Nov 22 11 10:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None If you have been following my post"s you know I am having an accuracy problem with my 308 single shot.With a strong flash light and a magnifying glass I can see a "hack saw" edge right at the end of the muzzle. A little fuzz on the edge of each grove, right on the end. Any suggestion on working this out. Complete re crown or what? It is a new rifle. fastshooter

Posts: 2472 Nov 24 11 11:17 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I find it difficult to believe that the muzzle of a "new rifle" was cut with a hack saw. There may have been an issue when it was turned (as they are all turned on lathes) because of a tooling problem. Dull or broken turning tool or some such. However, if in fact there is an issue with the crown, it depends on if it is still square with the bore or not. If it is square to the bore, you can take a 3/8's brass rod (1/2 inch in a drill that can chuck it would be better), run it in a drill and file a hemisphere on it. This is NOT the preferred method, however I'm guessing you don't have a lathe. After you have a fairly decent hemisphere you can apply lapping compound (I'd use a medium grit) to the muzzle and carefully lap the crown at a slow speed to break the edges of the lands and grooves. You'd want to apply moderate pressure and move the drill motor in small circles while applying pressure. This allows any imperfections to average out. The only other thing is a total re-crown, best done in a lathe. "We must all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately." Got really serious with my hand loads and had 5 shots touching holes with one another. 2 grains above the starting load with 150 grain psp. flat base.fastshooter

It happens he is not on this forum, in case anyone was wondering about the crown situation.fastshooter.

Valve grinding compound and a cordless drill. Most times when I post a ? here I do so else where. I am very sorry your suggestion didn't come first but I do appreciate your input.fastshooter

I too can be cynical and seek extra info and need the "proof in the pudding", but you gotta admit, Eb nailed it - it probably is a bit unfair to deny to give him credit. I'm not going to take sides and like the posts that both of you provide - both active "long timers" here. Eb's got experience and FastShooter's on the way there [I like to think I've had a hand in that but I guess I can be arrogant.]. Don't have to get along to pass on knowledge I guess.). I'm surprised that they would've let that out of the factory like that. Where's the quality control? I mean they are a budget firearm, but still you'd expect this not to happen. That sounds like a warranty claim to me, but not valid now I guess (but problem appears to have been solved). I break out in a sweat when I think about messing with the crown, in fact I have a rifle with a file finished muzzle after cutting off a bad section of muzzle abuse. It was recommended that I apply a crown of some sort but I chickened out. Besides I got the accuracy I expected so I left alone. I was shocked to see my Remington barrel with obvious reaming (?) marks when I got it, but it doesn't seem to affect it, but then again the crowning was okay. Even Larry Potterfield had it on one of the hunting shows on the out door channel before your post. Every little bit helps. I now know why my P14 will not group good. It has the same type barrel and it is the same way. I will have to do the same job on it. I am not hurt from what you posted.fastshooter.
