1864 civil war gun

Posts: 3 Dec 12 11 4:51 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I have an old rifle that has the date 1864 to the left of where the hammer is attached and to the right is an eagle with U.S. under it then to the right of that are the letters SN & W.T.C. below them is what looks like EOR and below that Massachusetts. It is a large bore like maybe 50 caliber. I'm wondering what it is worth. The hammer and trigger do work but other than that I know nothing about it. If you have any ideas what this is worth or who to contact about selling it please let me know. It supposedly belonged to my great grandfather who was a major in the civil war. But he was from N.Y. not Conn. Thank you for an help you can give me.

Posts: 1114 Dec 14 11 11:43 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It is a .58 caliber M1863 Contract musket made in 1864 by SN & W.T.C. which indicates that it was made under contract by Samuel Norris and W.T.Clement. The "For Massachusetts" means that it is one of the rifle muskets that they made for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. They made both M1861 and M1863 Rifle Muskets. As Japlmg said, in order to give an accurate evaluation we would need to see photographs of the rifle musket and detailed shots of all features. Is it complete or has the barrel been cut? Barrel should be 40 inches long from the muzzle to the breach. As an officer, your Great Grandfather would not have carried a musket, he was a staff officer and would have been armed with a sword and pistol. However, he may very well have acquired this example after the War as an example of the weapon that the men under his command carried.
