I about had a stroke when I saw how much those K98's were running. I know demand also drives the prices some so hopefully one day it will settle down a bit.

I was at a gun show this past weekend and I saw several K98's and most of them had all German markings scrubbed off. The lowest asking price I saw on any of them was $1,200. Just absolute lunacy. I figure the real idiots are the ones actually paying that price, the sellers are going to sell at whatever price they can, it's the buyers that continue to set the prices by being stupid enough to pay those prices.

It's a rare gun show that will have half a dozen milsurps and they are practically unseen in local shops. The lunacy is that they are always over priced but then they complain that they don't sell! Posts: 30 Nov 11 12 5:47 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Keep in mind that these German rifles have not been produced in over 60 yeurs and Nazi produced items have always been sought by collectors. A Russian capture rifle is almost guarenteed to have been used in combat.True, is nice to find a vet bring back rifle, but they are scarce. So many were de-militarized and truned into hunting rifles in the popular U.S. calibers. I have a couple in my collection but I view them in the same light as thr RC rifles. The biggest differance is who captured them. We never intended to take the German rifles, re-work them and store them for use in case of another hostile invasion. AQfter losing millions of people to the German invasion during WWII, the Russian government. was very paranoid of another such event. Value your RC rifle and remember when you hold it in your hands you are holding a piece of history.

It's just that for so long the RC's were sneered at by the "serious" collectors. I can understand that (though I don't share that view) considering the Soviets refurb practices. As I said, I haven't kept track of the pricing of these so much since my primary collecting interests lie elsewhere. I only got this one because I really like the side rail marking. Then here this one came through a shop I frequent and was decently priced. (I think I paid like $259 for it and that was a few years back.) But oh yes I am aware of the history these, all the C&Rs, represent. That is the whole focus and reason for this site. Posts: 30 Nov 15 12 3:55 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Agreed I have been a gun collector since 1955 when at 15 years old I bought a DWM 1916 Luger in a pawn shop for $14.00. If I remember correctly the pistol had about 90% 0f the original finish and all the numbers matched. Mausers were selling in the $20.00 range and even Winchester 1873's could be bought for $40.00 each,$35.00 if you bought two or more. In October of 1955 I bought a running 1945 Willys Model MB Army Jeep for $100.00 and drove it home. Times have changed and beginning collectors have to search all the avenues they can to find bargains. Sometime that means re-building that first 98K uo from a barreled receiver or a sporterized Mauser, and that still runs into hundreds of dollars. I was shocked recently when someone on Ebay paid $560.00 just for a BYF Waffenamped stock. Don't wait for these beauties to go down in price. View them as investments, only appreciating in value.

That was a far cry from my 1945 jeep. The head cheerleader, not to be outdone by her wealthy rival received a beautiful pink and white 55 Crown Victoria Ford with white leather seats from her parents. To add to the drama, the lead baton twirler in the band had HIS father buy HIM a 55 Ford Thunderbird, red of course. My old Army green jeep was pretty weak competetion for the rich kids. Wonder whjere eare now?

He'd only keep a finished one while he was working on his next project. He redid a 55 Chevy. When he got ready to sell he was asking $2400 but told us if anybody in the unit wanted it they could have it for what he had in it, $1600 IIRC. Oh I tried to raise that money but, that was a lot of money for an SP/4 in those days! Too much as it happened. I did wind up getting a 65 Impala for $250 though. Sigghhh. That car got stolen in Houston in 81. I no this has nothing to do with German Mausers and as a site moderator I should not be encouraging OT posting so from here on, if you want to discuss cars or what not, just give me a PM. OK? Posts: 232 Feb 14 13 8:18 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I bought a 1943 Daimler-Puch A.G. Werke (Styer) for $179 in 2003. People were sneering at them then, but I kinda like its unique history. I'm not a big K98 person.. I have one all original WWII, an Israeli 308 (unfired after rebarrel), the RC, and a Yugo marked K98 ($88 in 2003). Yugo is best shooter in the herd! Haven't regretted any of them. I had a couple of other Israelis, but they were beaters.

How can you tell that's what it is? As near as I can tell, my rifle pictured above has the same stock but, I am not positive not knowing the difference. Can somebody clear that up for me? In other words, the Germans built forged flat butt plates for over a year after WW II began (1 Sept 1939). The K98 phased in laminated stocks in 1938, but the Germans still used solid hardwood stocks from various sources up to 1943. For example, there are some Oberndorf Mauser byf43 K98s with original oak (yes, oak) stocks. I guess a person could determine the vintage of the stock if the original stamps haven't been sanded off by the Russians. I would bet that the wood on this RC K98 is not original to the barreled receiver, since the Soviets built these guns from components in parts bins.

You can see my rifle has a laminated stock and the flat butt plate. But, as regards the stock stamps, they are all gone and there's a big flat spot where the original serial number was so there's no question that my stock is not original to it. I don't really care though since it was the Gothic side rail marking I was after.
