Vetterli (Carcano) acquisition
Went to KY for deer season and made stops along the way looking for possible bargains. Found this Vetterli 1870/87/15 in a pawn shop in KY. After a brief discussion it was mine at $225 (tax included) OTD.
I asked about the rifles history and all he could tell me was that an elderly gentleman brought it in and said it had been at his home "for years." Dirty, some surface rust. Removed the bolt. Barrel dirty but the lands and grooves are really sharp. Will work on the cleaning later today or tomorrow. Any information or insight from members of this forum would be greatly appreciated.
Big question.......Shooting this firearm. From what I have read last evening the general consensus is 1) have it checked out first by a gunsmith and 2) if OK use reduced loads with cast bullets.
Pictures posted for review.
