Here is a picture on the wikipedia M1 Carbine page. It is reported to be Marines on Iwo Jima. The forground Marine in the foxhole has an M1 Carbine. The Marine walking/crouched just behind them appears to have a shotgun!

Very interesting if my eyes are not playing tricks on me. The forward sling swivel is too far forward for it to be an M1 rifle. What shotgun does it appear to be?
